It was our much-awaited couple staycation and this time round, it was the highly acclaimed The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore, near Raffles City or just opposite City Hall MRT! We managed to grab an offer through a flash sale on their website during Christmas period in 2020 and we only needed to pay for $270!
This hotel has a total of 155 rooms and undergone restoration for a few years some time back, using the former buildings of the neoclassical-style Capitol Building (1930) and Venetian Renaissance-style Stamford House (1904). The location is highly accessible to many local attractions like the Merlion Park, Marina Bay Sands and shopping options at Suntec City and Marina Square too!
We arrived at the hotel at about 11.15am and a hotel staff in red immediately emerged from the entrance and greeted us with a big smile! After logging into SafeEntry, we were then ushered to the check-in desk and to our surprise, we got a complimentary upgrade from Classic to Deluxe Room and given a very exquisite gift from the hotel - a cup!
Once we were handed with our room cards, the hotel staff volunteered to bring us to our room and introduced the various amenities and at the drinks bar, the Nespresso coffee capsules, TWG tea bags and non-alcoholic beverages (eg. Coke, Coke Zero, San Pellegrino Bottled Sparkling Water, Bottled Apple and Orange Juices) were absolutely FREE!
I particularly liked the high ceiling room, deco that was similar to Fullerton Hotel and the layout of the furniture with one as the clothes cupboard and the other, the drinks closet.
The TV seems to be a Samsung 55", with Android mirroring and Apple Airplay capabilities so that you can cast your Netflix shows to binge watch. Apart from the local and news channels, the other channels available catered to sports enthusiasts (beIN, Fox and mio), movie buffs (HBO, Fox, Xing Kong and Citra Drama), documentary (Travel, Nat Geo) and cartoon channels (Cartoon Network, Boomerang, BabyTV and Nickelodeon) for families too!
The toilet and bathroom were well segregated and there were 2 sinks fitted outside them. The toiletries included dental kits, hand sanitisers, masks and more. The bathing liquids and hand soap were by Salvatore Ferragamo.
There was a pool situated at L4 and it was said to be a saltwater relaxation pool. The compound was rather small which could probably accommodate 5-6 pax due to prevailing COVID-19 constraints. Pool was not deep, hence it was truly for relaxation purpose.
The bed and pillows were too soft for my comfort so I needed 2 stacked pillows for a good night's sleep. Aircon was blasting at 22 deg C and the environment was sleep-inducing.
In terms of breakfast, Kempinski Hotel is undisputedly one of the best offerings in town right now - ala carte buffet and some extent of beverage customisation was allowed. The restaurant is located at L1, known as 15 Stamford by Alvin Leung. The interior design of the restaurant was a brilliant blend of wood, marble and metallic fittings. The restaurant was spacious with high ceiling, which gave a grandeur feel.
There was a good variety of food such as the appetisers (cold cuts, smoked salmon, cheeses etc), local specialties (nasi lemak, chwee kueh, roti prata, congee, prawn noodle soup etc), western delights (bacon, sausages, granola, eggs benedict etc) and for those with a sweet tooth, french toast, pancakes, waffles and fresh fruit plate were available too. **By the way, for those having an upcoming stay with breakfast there, do note that you are able to make a special request for your food by letting the server know. With that, I bravely requested for fried bee hoon and also avocado milkshake and... ta da! It appeared promptly on the table! I was like totally wow-ed by this level of service! Next time, I might consider requesting for a set of avocado sandwich for breakfast~
Another highlight of the breakfast was the wagon trolley! Instead of the usual dim sum trolley, a server was pushing this wagon trolley with many spreads and jams on it. In preparation for desserts, we ordered honeycomb, truffle honey (recommended to try), apple cider, dark chocolate and passion fruit. These would nicely complement the yoghurt and waffles or pancakes any time!
All in all, my overall experience at The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore was arguably one of the best local staycations - I had to constantly rationalise between Pan Pacific Hotel and Mandarin Oriental Hotel. The architecture and decor of the hotel was top-notch, service level of staff was exceptional and the breakfast was totally awesome!
